As Paul contemplated and evaluated the fruit of his ministry, he must have wondered, What is going to meet me when I arrive in Corinth? I don’t want things to continue as they have been. Something has to change. We can surmise this was the apostle’s train of thought because he seems to have made some monumental decisions about his life and ministry — about things he would and would never do again — by the time he arrived in Corinth.

In fact, those 50 miles of walking to Corinth alone with God would become a real defining moment for the apostle Paul. Decisions were made that would dramatically impact the rest of his life and ministry.

When a person has gone through a series of bad experiences, that person usually reaches a stage at which he is ready to change and embrace whatever steps are needed to get on a new track. He or she doesn’t want to keep repeating the same patterns of thought and action that have produced disappointment in the past.

Can you think of instances in your own life in which you made a series of mistakes in a particular area — until you finally came to the point of resolving that you would not continue making those same mistakes? Paul was apparently in that state of mind as he walked the distance between Athens and Corinth. He was ready to do whatever was needed to experience a greater level of the demonstration of God’s power in his life and ministry. And by the time he arrived in Corinth, he had come to a conclusion that would forever alter the focus of his ministry.
